Last post for EDC 3100!!

Mission accomplished!! After this post, which will mean 3 posts for each week, out of the 4 weeks as required by course examiner, David Jones, for my BECH (Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood) course with the University of Southern Queensland, Australia, subject EDC 3100, ICT and Pedagogy.
Although I've gotten an extension for my assignment as I'll only be finishing my prac at the end of June, thought I'll just finished up my learning paths and blog as would like to concentrate on my prac.

Class Dojo

First time I've heard of this Class Dojo, classroom tool that helps teachers improve behavior in their classrooms quickly and easily. KayYi posted this up in her blog the other day. Really interesting!! A new tool to use! The benefits stated are:
For teachers: in some classrooms, more than 50% of class time is spent managing behavior rather than delivering instruction; ClassDojo aims to greatly reduce this so teachers can do more teaching and less crowd control! In addition, for the first time, teachers have a painless way to focus on developing positive behavior over time, rather than just logging referrals once it is too late to intervene.
For students: research suggests the shorter the time period between an action and feedback for that action, the greater is the effect of the reinforcement. Specific positive reinforcement helps students develop a sense of purpose in the classroom, enhancing intrinsic motivation over time. By giving students visibility and data on their own behavior, ClassDojo makes class less disruptive and creates a more positive learning environment.
For parents: ClassDojo makes it easy to engage parents in their child's development, by allowing teachers to provide them with realtime data from the classroom - with just one click.
How cool is that! Can even use it for my own kids!!

Weekly Reflection - wk 15

Started my prac last week (FINALLY!!), when everyone else has either finished or is half way through prac :( but then again has also finished my resignation notice of 30 days from work (YAAY!!), which means I have more time to concentrate on my studies.

So, now that I've loads of time in my hand, I've been reading more fellow course mates blogs when I came upon this Google Glass when I was reading Jia Lerk's blog on this cool eye wear.
Check this out!!

This is how advanced technology is getting!!

Is there such thing as creativity in Malaysian schools?

I was reading through my fellow course mate Jo's (pronounced as Joe!!) interesting blog (except for that slimy Hermit the frog!!), when I came across this 'Please don’t kill my creativity' on Sir Ken Robinson's 'Schools kill creativity'.
Well, not sure about schools in other countries but am certainly sure that national schools in Malaysia do kill the students' creativity!! I've read an article 'Unschool Me Today!' and it's stated that "The general feeling, from the teachers and parents interviewed in the article and from students in class is that we should just have better teachers. So what makes a better teacher? It’s true that with better teachers you might not even need a standardized curriculum after all – only the most incompetent teachers or the most elementary of students need a textbook to lean on." , which I personally feel it's so true!!

Funny experiment with the help of technology!!

I came across this article the other day, 'Dutch television hosts Dennis Storm and Valerio Zeno decided to experience simulated labor contractions in order to know what women feel during birth. The two men yelled, cried and clutched at pillows for over two hours of the artificial "labor" ordeal.

The video clip shows Storm and Zeno, hosts of the popular Dutch-language show "Guinea Pigs," explaining why they were taking on the challenge. They said that because labor pains are the worst possible and because men cannot experience real-life labor they agreed to be subjected to electro-stimulation that simulate the contractions of labor and give an experience of the distress of birth pangs'.

And I thought that wouldn't it be great if all men tried this experiment to understand the pain their mothers or wives go through when giving birth to them or their children!! Now, where's that husband of mine?? (Haha!!!)

Weekly Reflection - wk 11

As I was reading some of my fellow course mates blogs, I came across Chai Hung's blog on the advantages vs disadvantages of ICT. This reminded me of the scenario at work when there's no internet connection or when the interactive whiteboard (IWB) decide to go on strike!! Are we too dependent on technology? Well, as for me, I can live without the computer or internet (unless when assignments are due soon, then I'll probably freak out if there's no internet connection!!) but bot without my mobile phone!! As a mother of four, that's the most crucial technology that I must have all the time and wherever I am.
As stated by Tom Chatfield in his article When Smart is not so Smart, "Are we becoming too reliant on technology and what happens if it is suddenly taken away from us?"
This is definitely something for us to think about!!.

Schema

Read the following paragraph and fill in the blanks. If you’re really keen add a comment below with what you got. Actually, gathering a collection of responses from a range of people would be really interesting.

What is Schema?
Piaget called the schema the basic building block of intelligent behavior – a way of organizing knowledge.

While reading a course mate, Kat Goh's blog on schema, she wrote about the experiment that our course examiner, David made us do (refer to paragraph above). You can also read his post on schemata and the source of dissonance?
And if you are a visual person like me, for a better understanding of schema, watch this clip below!

Life-changing advances in technology

As I reading through Teresa Morgan's blog, I came upon "How Much Changes in Ten Years?" Really interesting and it sort of prompted me to think about the technologies that I DEFINITELY CAN'T live without!!

Wi-Fi

Gone are those nasty dial-up days of plugging 56k modems into shaky phone lines and hoping for the best; or precariously balancing laptops while avoiding pulling the plug on the internet connection.
Wi-Fi's 802.11 standard was first mooted in the late 90s, but has now come of age, with many homes now running wireless networks to cope with multiple devices requiring internet connections.
Free hotspots are dotted around major cities, meaning you no longer need to go far to check email.

iPod

Sure, it's not the only MP3 player out there, but when Apple's iPod first made its debut in 2001, no one could have predicted the mammoth success that it has become - racking up 173 million unit sales by September 2008. It's come a long way from the humble, mono-screened beginnings, evolving from a hard drive spinner to flash-memory packing devices that range from the near-pointless Shuffle to the video-capable Nano and the flagship Touch, which connects to Wi-Fi networks to let users surf the net as well as play games and play with GoogleMaps. Then there's the so-called 'Jesus phone' - the iPhone 3G, which adds a cellphone and next-gen internet capability to the Touch.

Google

Need to know anything? Google it. A late arrival to the lucrative world of internet search, Google was the result of Larry Page and Sergey Brin's research project at Stamford in 1996. The company launched two years later and is currently the king of all things search, with a market share of 62.9 per cent and handling up to five billion searches each month. The company has managed to expand into many different tech spaces with projects like its open source Android mobile phone operating system and the Chrome internet browser and voyeur's delight Street View, all released in 2008.
Digital cameras

Digital cameras have come a long, long way in the past decade. In 1999, a 2.7 megapixel digital SLR would set you back in the region of $25,000 - and that was just for the body. The staggering pricing of these early digitals made them strictly pro-only. Times have certainly changed, and while high-end DSLRs like Nikon's D3X and Canon's D1 Mk3 will set you back close to $10,000; point-and-click, zoom-capable eight megapixel compact digital cameras cost less than $400. Most cellphones feature a built-in camera these days, but there really is no substitute for a stand-alone camera for ease of use and quality of results. Bundled software has improved alongside price, and now anyone with half a brain can tackle simple photo-editing.

Facebook

By far the biggest success story of the Web 2.0 world, Facebook took on New Corp's MySpace in 2004 and started to change the way we run our lives online. It was started by baby-faced Mark Zuckerberg. Microsoft bought a small stake in Facebook, which is now estimated to be worth US$15 billion (NZ$27bn). Part of the Facebook appeal is the ability to add applications to your profile - the most high-profile being Scrabulous, a Scrabble knock off that had half a million users playing every day. It also allows people from past lives to suddenly pop up, wanting to be your friend.

Weekly Reflection - wk 10

This week has been the most memorable week of my life! I've quit my job and felt really good about it!!

I can now concentrate on my prac and my personal life!! The only thing that I'm going to feel sad about is missing the kids and the some of my super cool and nice colleagues that I love dearly!
But, life goes on!! We need to adapt to changes in order to reach the next level, just like in technology!! But of course, there are certain things in life that we cannot or is better that we do not change too much!!.
Professor Susan Greenfield, has stated in Modern technology is changing the way our brains work that

"Human identity, the idea that defines each and every one of us, could be facing an unprecedented crisis. It is a crisis that would threaten long-held notions of who we are, what we do and how we behave. It goes right to the heart - or the head - of us all. This crisis could reshape how we interact with each other, alter what makes us happy, and modify our capacity for reaching our full potential as individuals.
And it's caused by one simple fact: the human brain, that most sensitive of organs, is under threat from the modern world".

Preparing for Prac or So I Thought!!

I was in the mist of preparing for my 15 days prac; application for prac placement done and have gotten my application approved!! It's officially on Sonia!! (Yaay!!) submitted my leave application at work (which has not been approved yet although I've submitted it before Easter!!). Called up the school that I'll be doing prac to make an appointment to meet up with my mentor. Just when I thought I've gotten things under control, I was told that the management at the school that I'm working in would prefer me to do my prac there!! WTF!! Why didn't they tell me earlier! Why must they wait till the last minute to drop the bombshell? Have they considered the hassle that they've put me through by doing this?? Appeal has to be made, if its approved, application for placement to be send again, have to call school that I'm supposed to be doing prac in, to inform them that I would not be doing my prac there (which of course, will make me look like an absolute @#xx#@e!!). Senseless and ridiculous!!

Facebook

While reading my course mate, Neena's blog on 'Facebooking', it has made me wonder why are most of us (yes! that includes you and me!!) are obsessed with facebook. This has prompted me to search for the statistics of facebook users, which I found on this website Facebook Statistics, Stats & Facts For 2011 | Digital Buzz Blog

Facebook Statistics, Stats and Facts for 2011 are starting to roll out, and here is the first infographic to wrap them all up thanks to Online Schools. With over 500 million users, Facebook is now used by 1 in every 13 people on earth, with over 250 million of them (over 50%) who log in every day. The average user still has about 130 friends, but that should expand in 2011.

48% of 18-34 year olds check Facebook when they wake up, with 28% doing so before even getting out of bed. The 35+ demographic is growing rapidly, now with over 30% of the entire Facebook user base. The core 18-24 year old segment is now growing the fastest at 74% year on year. Almost 72% of all US internet users are on now Facebook, while 70% of the entire user base is located outside of the US.

Over 700 Billion minutes a month are spent on Facebook, 20 million applications are installed per day and over 250 million people interact with Facebook from outside the official website on a monthly basis, across 2 million websites. Over 200 million people access Facebook via their mobile phone. 48% of young people said they now get their news through Facebook. Meanwhile, in just 20 minutes on Facebook over 1 million links are shared, 2 million friend requests are accepted and almost 3 million messages are sent.

YUP!! I feel like I need eight hands most of the time, as I have four kids and a husband, assignments, work and house chores  to attend to when I'm home!!
Sometimes I do wish that I have much more time in my hands like some of my friends, KayYi and Hsing Hua who are single and having a ball of their lives hanging out!! And I never have the time to play with games like candy crush (although I'm not so into all this computer games thingy like my two boys!!). Talking about candy crush, KayYi posted about candy crush in her blog previously. In it she mentioned about the 8 Life Lessons by Candy Crush by Joni Cham. Interesting facts that should be read by parents!!

Project Noah

I have heard of Project Noah but has never really gotten into in-depth about it till I was reading fellow course mate Vicky's blog, 'A young teacher's walk'. Vicky has written about it in a very interesting way that has prompted me to check out this website.
In her posting about Project Noah, Vicky has stated 'It is a tool to explore and document wildlife and a platform to harness the power of citizen scientists everywhere' about this website which after going into it, I found that it is a brilliant website for all ages!!. It is a really useful website for teachers especially to teach their students about wildlife species.

And as written by BBC's Ella Davies:

A smart way to save wildlife

And as quoted by BBC:
"A modern invention that may also hold the key to saving species in the future. Project Noah is a global study that encourages nature lovers to document the wildlife they encounter, using a purpose built phone app and web community. In addition to the virtual "collection" of species, Project Noah encourages citizen science by linking up with existing surveys including the International Spider Survey and the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network".

Only halfway through my unit plan, so much to read and research on!! Guess I'll be burning the midnight oil tonight as submission is tomorrow!! But luckily my course mate KayYi who has just came back from her holidays in Japan, (read her post 'Holiday Mood') has gotten me a Totoro keychain!! :) Looking at it really brightened up my day. Again technology was used for the animation when director and writer Hayao Miyazaki created it to be made into a family/fantasy movie. This movie has in 1989 won five awards, Blue Ribbon Special Award, Kinema Junpo Award, Readers' Choice Award, Mainichi Film Concours, Ofuji Noburo Award and was also nominated for the Saturn Award under Best Genre Video Release

Misuse of Technology.

Reading through one of my course mates, Megan Lim's blog, one of her postings "Facebook Status: Deceased", she has mentioned that one of her tutors has recently brought up an issue that a deceased friend’s facebook account who was apparently being used by the deceased’s family member. The tutor and her group of friends are receiving notifications from the deceased friend and they are finding the notifications from somewhat disturbing. Megan's immediate reactions to this issue was that of misuse or that of identity theft. She google searched for more information and found 3 main ways to go about the issue. Below are the information that she has posted up which I personally thought was really useful and everyone should be aware of it!

"1. Memorialising Accounts.

I was surprised to find a ‘Memorialization’ option for a deceased person’s facebook account. wow! We could actually report to facebook on a facebook user’s death. This was something new to me. Here is a list of what happens when a facebook user’s account is ‘memorialised‘ from this Facebook FAQ page for Deactivating, Deleting & Memorialising AccountsWhen a person passes away, we memorialize their account to protect their privacy. Here are some of the key features of memorialized accounts:
No one can log into a memorialized account and no new friends can be accepted
Depending on the privacy settings of the deceased person’s account, friends can share memories on the memorialized timeline. Anyone can send private messages to the deceased person
Content the deceased person shared (ex: photos, posts) remains on Facebook and is visible to the audience it was shared with. Memorialized timelines don’t appear in People You May Know and other suggestions
Creating a timeline in remembrance of an already deceased person is not allowed. We encourage you to create a Page to do this. Learn how to request the memorialization of a deceased person’s account.

2. Deletion of Account.

Alternatively if having access digital footprints and memories of their loved ones is too hard to bear, immediate family members may request for permanent deletion of the deceased’s facebook account. Here is a link to it ‘Special Request for Deceased Person’s Account’.

3. Leaving Passwords to Account.

There is also a ‘trend’ of leaving Facebook Passwords in Wills as the Will creator sometimes would like families to access personal or family digital photos and videos that they do not have in print. You can read more about it in this article ‘People Are Starting To Leave Their Facebook Passwords In Their Will'  by Davis October 13, 2011.

This has reminded me of an article that I've previously read,

"According to lawyer Robert Allard, 15-year-old Audrie Pott hanged herself last September after students shared photos showing her being sexually assaulted during a party on cell phones and online.
News of the arrest in connection to Pott's alleged sexual assault comes just days after a 17-year-old Canadian girl committed suicide after being allegedly raped Like in Audrie's case, Rehtaeh Parsons' alleged attackers also took pictures of the rape and circulated them around school. The girl's parents say the once-popular and confident teen became the target of relentless bullying and name-calling, which continued even after her death".

Links to Audrie and Retaeh's stories:
Audrie Pott

Rehtaeh Parsons

The community, especially younger generation should be taught not only how to use technology but also to use it wisely as everyone should understand that the misuse of technology can cause harm and even death!!

Unit Plan

After reading through assignment 2 criteria and going through the
Assignment 2 forums, got a feeling that its really going to be hectic and consistent burning of the midnight oil!! :(
Below is the criteria:
There are two parts to the assignment:
Part A: Learning journal - worth 5% of the course mark
Part B: A 3-5 week unit design, including a 500 word essay justifying your ICT choices - worth 35% of the course mark.
This assignment consists of three main tasks:
  1. The learning journal
  2. Unit plan and
  3. Essay.
For a more detailed planning of how to do the unit plan, read through KayYi's blog and saw her putting this up, which she has taken from fellow coursemate, Carmen Gambe.

Step 1 - Consider the context.
Information should include:
• Students
• School
• Special Events
• Staff
Step 2 – Understand the alignment process: Curriculum, Assessment and Pedagogy
Head to the source for Curriculum documents, Structural models and Constructing/Transforming knowledge.
Step 3 – Plan units by considering the following questions:
1. What curriculum will we use?
2. What evidence do students need to produce?
3. How will we foster learning that uses the curriculum to produce evidence?

That makes me wonder why is everyone else so organized and I am not??

Reading through Hsing Hua and Chai Hung's interesting blogs, I saw that they've put in the stickman game as well. Gosh, think the everyone in class has been playing with it!! Yes, that includes me and as a matter of fact, I've also introduced this interesting and fun game to my kids at home! If you are not aware of this game We are into our week 5 now, starting on our unit plan which is our for assignment 2, due on the 22nd April 2013 (doomsday!!). Never been fantastic in creating unit plans and to think of using the Australian Curriculum makes it worst!! Don't get me wrong, the Australian Curriculum is brilliant but the research and read up on it thats making dread doing the unit plan. I've chosen Science for prep year. Have always been more comfortable in the early years setting than primary or middle school.

Using the Interactive Whiteboard

There are many advantages to using interactive whiteboards. The following are probably the main ones.
  • They provide electronically all the familiar features of a traditional classroom blackboard or ordinary whiteboard.
  • They replace the scenario of a large group crowding around a single computer. The interactive whiteboard allows a large group to sit and participate comfortably in a presentation.
  • You can enhance any presentation or lesson by easily integrating video, animation, graphics, text and audio with the spoken presentation.
  • You can display material from a number sources such as CD-ROMs, websites, DVDs, VHS tapes and television. There are other methods of presentation of information on the horizon offering further flexibility.
  • You can usually edit information directly during lessons and save any changes or additions to the computer.
  • Notes, diagrams and entire lessons or presentations can be saved, archived and added to the intranet or similar centralised resource. This means that presentation or class'work in progress' can be saved ready for the next period.
  • Student benefits from the interaction with the knowledge and task, both personally and socially.
  • Creates a collaborative layout and an environment of engagement so that there is naturally more dialogue between tutor and students, peer-to-peer and within groups.
  • Some say that students are better behaved and more motivated.
  • Effective method of presenting ideas, whether to students or colleagues, or to prospects.
  • Useful way of getting feedback on ideas from others. There are many ways of achieiving this. If you want, you could kit the audience with keypads from the XPress Audience Response System and link them up with the computer in the interactive whiteboard setup and get responses in real time on the computer screen. The responses could be to test questions, contests, exams, or voting.

Reasons for Teachers to use Technology in the Classrooms

source: technologynewsvideos (2013) Top Ten Reasons to Use Technology in Education. Retrieved from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWaYoyZVSxo

Technology is ubiquitous, touching almost every part of our lives, our communities, our homes. Yet most schools lag far behind when it comes to integrating technology into classroom learning. Many are just beginning to explore the true potential tech offers for teaching and learning. Properly used, technology will help students acquire the skills they need to survive in a complex, highly technological knowledge-based economy. Integrating technology into classroom instruction means more than teaching basic computer skills and software programs in a separate computer class. Effective tech integration must happen across the curriculum in ways that research shows deepen and enhance the learning process. In particular, it must support four key components of learning: active engagement, participation in groups, frequent interaction and feedback, and connection to real-world experts. Effective technology integration is achieved when the use of technology is routine and transparent and when technology supports curricular goals.

Many people believe that technology-enabled project learning is the ne plus ultra of classroom instruction. Learning through projects while equipped with technology tools allows students to be intellectually challenged while providing them with a realistic snapshot of what the modern office looks like. Through projects, students acquire and refine their analysis and problem-solving skills as they work individually and in teams to find, process, and synthesize information they've found online.

The myriad resources of the online world also provide each classroom with more interesting, diverse, and current learning materials. The Web connects students to experts in the real world and provides numerous opportunities for expressing understanding through images, sound, and text.

New tech tools for visualizing and modeling, especially in the sciences, offer students ways to experiment and observe phenomenon and to view results in graphic ways that aid in understanding. And, as an added benefit, with technology tools and a project-learning approach, students are more likely to stay engaged and on task, reducing behavioral problems in the classroom.

Technology also changes the way teachers teach, offering educators effective ways to reach different types of learners and assess student understanding through multiple means. It also enhances the relationship between teacher and student. When technology is effectively integrated into subject areas, teachers grow into roles of adviser, content expert, and coach. Technology helps make teaching and learning more meaningful and fun (Edutopia, 2008).

What is ICT in Education?

"ICT"is the Information and Communication Technologies. "ICT in Education" means "Teaching and Learning with ICT".

source: Elmo Classroom Solutions (2012). What is ICT in Education. Retrieved from http://www.elmoglobal.com/en/images/ict/img02.gif

Educational ICT tools can be divided into 3 categories: Input source, Output source and Others.

Worldwide research has shown that ICT can lead to improved student learning and better teaching methods. A report made by the National Institute of Multimedia Education in Japan, proved that an increase in student exposure to educational ICT through curriculum integration has a significant and positive impact on student achievement, especially in terms of "Knowledge・Comprehension" · "Practical skill" and "Presentation skill" in subject areas such as mathematics, science, and social study.

However, you can see that there are many education technology solutions provided in the world which may cause confusion among educators about how to choose the right ICT solution. Let's have a look at the advantages and disadvantages of ICT tools for education and discover what kind of education ICT solution is suitable for your school needs.

3 Main advantages of ICT tools for education

1‧ Through ICT, images can easily be used in teaching and improving the retentive memory of students.
2‧ Through ICT, teachers can easily explain complex instructions and ensure students' comprehension.
3‧ Through ICT, teachers are able to create interactive classes and make the lessons more enjoyable, which could improve student attendance and concentration.

3 Main disadvantages of ICT tools for education

1‧ Setting up the devices can be very troublesome.
2‧ Too expensive to afford
3‧ Hard for teachers to use with a lack of experience using ICT tools

Weekly Reflection - wk 3

Finally! Made it for class, yaay!! Tons of things to do and so little time!! Although some confusion were sorted out in class today, being not that tech savvy has left me feeling overwhelmed and worried!
Very recently at work, just gotten to know that international schools here are using digital portfolio! Info about digital portfolio:

Since the advent of constructivism, education has seen a slow, steady shift from knowledge being imparted to students toward knowledge being created by students. Along with this shift has grown a need to create opportunities for students to produce meaningful artifacts. We see this best in the growing trend toward project-based learning. A portfolio is a collection of artifacts demonstrating knowledge and skills. These artifacts should be structured and presented in a format that is easy to navigate and easy to read. A portfolio's contents should be interrelated and should address one overall theme. A digital portfolio does the same thing, except that the artifacts are all in digital format. Digital portfolios hold enormous potential for structuring, organizing, and presenting digital artifacts. However, many digital portfolio projects are contained within closed systems. Some are in file format and therefore available only to those in possession of the files. Others are online but reside within password-protected environments.

The advent of what we now call Web 2.0, or the read/write web exponentially increased the ease of content production and publishing. Suddenly the consumer could become the producer. A decade ago if you wanted to create a website, you would have to learn how to use fairly difficult software — along with finding a hosting solution and managing the files — and you might even have to learn a bit of HTML. Now, with a few clicks of the mouse, a child who can't even spell Internet can create a published website. Hundreds of services provide free hosting and website creation tools. These websites are ideal platforms for digital portfolios because they can contain just about any type of digital content. Moreover, publishing to the web instantly creates a potential audience for the student.

Digital portfolios in a website format have the advantage of being able to contain embedded content (through embed codes rather than through links). This means, for example, that students can embed videos they create in YouTube or Animoto, presentations created in Prezi or SlideRocket, mind-maps created in Bubbl.us or SpicyNodes, screencasts created with Screenr or Screencast-o-Matic, and podcasts created with Chirbit or AudioBoo (Donaldson, 2012)

TPACK

TPACK which stands for Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge a type of framework used framework that identifies the knowledge teachers need to teach effectively with technology. At the heart of the TPACK framework, is the complex interplay of three primary forms of knowledge: Content (CK), Pedagogy (PK), and Technology (TK). The TPACK approach goes beyond seeing these three knowledge bases in isolation. TPACK also emphasizes the new kinds of knowledge that lie at the intersections between them, representing four more knowledge bases teachers applicable to teaching with technology: Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK), Technological Content Knowledge (TCK), Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK), and the intersection of all three circles, Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK).

Effective technology integration for pedagogy around specific subject matter requires developing sensitivity to the dynamic, transactional relationship between these components of knowledge situated in unique contexts. Individual teachers, grade-level, school-specific factors, demographics, culture, and other factors ensure that every situation is unique, and no single combination of content, technology, and pedagogy will apply for every teacher, every course, or every view of teaching (TPACK.org, n.d.)

Why Do We Need ICT as Part of the Curriculum?

Information and Communication Technology is needed to enable students to work collaboratively in all learning areas in school. It is essential that students have the capabilities such as learning to make the most of the digital technologies and adapting to new ways of doing things in order to use information and communication technology effectively and appropriately to create, communicate and access information.
Students also need to have the knowledge and skills to make use of information and communication technology to enable them to participate in a knowledge based economy and to be empowered within a technologically sophisticated society in their lives beyond school.

Weekly Reflection - wk 2

Well, what can I say! Missed out on this week's lecture AGAIN!! It's really hard when you have to work, study and a family with four kids to take care of!!
What should I prioritize? Work? As I need the money to pay for my course. Studies? I need it for my professional development. Family? Being in the early years sector for so many years, I know that it is essential to have quality time with my children.

Expresso Education

Monday, 04/03/2013
Had my training with the rest of the teachers at our school's ICT suite.
It is obvious that information and communication technology plays a big part as a teaching tool for a teacher.
In this training, there are all sorts of resources for the teachers to work with and for children to access and learn with. After all, learning takes place in all sorts of form and ways.
Children in the 21st century should be exposed and given the opportunity to access to all kinds of information and communication technology tools. As a matter of fact, children should be computer illiterate so that they will be equipped to face the world when they enter adulthood. And furthermore, which child in this world can resist the temptation of handling a information and technology tool like the computer!

Missed out on today's lecture by Ms Ng, my tutor for EDC 3100, ICT & Pedagogy as was having a temperature :(  Had to checked with my course mate, KayYi (check out her awesome blog at http://teacherkayyi.blogspot.com) on what was needed to be done and how to do it. Must admit I'm not an ICT Einstein!! Probably my 6 years old son would be more ICT savvy than me!!
Absolutely thankful that I will be having ICT training at work this coming Monday. 'Expresso Education', a UK based programme that has a wide
range of interactive, video-rich classroom resources that inspire children to work on certain developmental areas with standards-based digital resources.
In today's world, it is essential that children have the knowledge of how use ICT tools
